Over recent years, child welfare agencies have moved towards giving preferential placement to members of the child’s biological family. As a result, grandparents, uncles and aunts, and even brothers and sisters, have taken on primary parenting roles. There are many issues that arise for many of these families, including a major change in their role in life, postponement of retirement, how to relate to the birth mother and father (if they are to be involved), and how to help the child understand and accept the substantial change in their roles.
